Having a boxer who is well trained can benefit both you and your dog in several ways. Keep your boxer well trained can prevent several problems. Knowing that your trained boxer will obey your command will bring ease to your mind.

Watching out for your boxers’ safety is the key to being a good owner. A boxer without proper training can get in to a lot of trouble. For example, you are bringing in groceries from your car while your boxer greets you by the door wagging his tail. Having full hands, you are unable to close and proceed to the kitchen to put them down so you can go back and close the door. A well trained boxer would not leave the house unless it was given permission to go. Now a boxer without proper training and strong curiosity might run out and scare your neighbors, which would result in problems with them.

Boxers can be intimidating creatures because of their size. Seeing one walking down the street might intimidate them. Naturally boxers are friendly and curious and will want to meet the person pulling you towards them and frighten them. However a well trained boxer would know that you’re the leader and you decide if the boxer gets to meet the stranger walking down the street.

A well trained boxer knows who his owner is and knows who he can trust. A boxer without proper training might not be as aware of who really is in charge. Keep your boxer well trained and safe.

One of the biggest problems with puppies is that they bite everyone and everything they can get their teeth on. You have to remind yourself that just like every child has to touch and feel everything, boxers have to bite and chew on everything. They have no clue of what’s edible, chewable or neither of those. So they have to test it with their teeth first.702809boxerpuppy

You might be asking yourself, How many times does my puppy have to bit me to figure out I’m not food. A boxer puppy biting you is just his way of playing with you. Boxers fierce, and at the same time adorable, growling might look like he is serious, but in reality it’s just a game. So don’t worry, your cute little monster is not out to get you, but is trying to just be friends.

These cute and fun games are fun, but at times your little boxer might bite you too hard. That is because while the boxer puppies are young, they do not know their full strength. That is why playing is so important. It helps boxer puppies to develop the sense of their own strength. To help your boxer puppy learn faster, you have to let it know when the puppy is biting too hard. Normally, boxer puppies would learn it trough playing with their littermates. Every time a boxer puppy would bite too hard, the recipient of the bite would yelp, cry out. That would show the little boxer bitter that such behavior hurts and is not very appreciated.

Does this mean you now have to yelp every time your boxer puppy bites you? Well not exactly, but the concept is the same. To properly train your boxer puppy to stop biting you, you will have to let it know that you do not appreciate that kind of playing. You can start training your boxer puppy by playing with him and when he bites you, yell out “Ouch.” Don’t scream it, or you will terrify your boxer puppy, but do it loud enough to get his attention. Wait a little bit and start playing with him again. If he bites you again do the same thing but a little louder and instead of going back to your game, stop what you are doing and leave. This will tell your boxer puppy that if he keeps biting you then you won’t play with him.

This training technique will require persistence, just as any other. So stick to it and your little boxer puppy will be trained in no time.

Boxers can be at times stubborn and hard to train because they need a reason for every command executed. Because of that, some owners try to punish their boxers when they do not follow their commands. This can lead to some future problems with their relationship with their dog. The boxer may resent you for punishing it or maybe even fear you and not fully trust you. Building trust with a boxer is key to an obedient dog. Boxers are extremely loyal, but how can they be if they cannot trust their owner?

A good alternative is not to punish the dog for not completing the task assigned by their trainer, but giving the dog treats, or a reward, for the things they DO get right. This is where the famous “click” reward comes in. We all learned in school about Pavlov and his experiment about ringing bell and food. Right before feeding his dog, he would ring a bell. This would cause the dog to associate the sound of the ringing bell with dinner time. You can do the same thing with a click and a treat. Every time you give your dog a treat, just click your clicker. This way your boxer will know that every time you click that clicker, you are pleased with it. Your pet will know it’s doing things right.

Remember that you won’t always carry your clicker around, so assisting phrases like “good boy/girl” with a treat is always recommended. That way you can still let your dog know your pleased when you don’t have your clicker with you.
